Truth & Iliza
Okay, so I went to see Iliza Schlesinger last week and OF COURSE I expected to spend the night laughing hysterically. Which I did. It was awesome. What I didn’t expect, was for her to drop some serious truth on body image…
Women are programmed from an early age to not like their bodies.
The media is always dictating what women should and shouldn’t look like and then selling us products to “fix” what’s “wrong” with our bodies. I’ve done a few posts now on body confidence and learning to love your body because I think it’s such an important topic and one that I know most people struggle with.
Really, I think body image is something that everyone struggles with–men and women. It’s just more of a focus for women, from a really young age and pretty much throughout our entire lives. Women are really harshly judged on the way we look, more than anything else. Which is total crap and so ridiculous, but that’s a topic for another day…
Anyways, Iliza mentioned loving your body and how it’s important but also how no one loves every part of their body. THIS. IS. SO. TRUE. You can totally be on a journey to love your body, but it’s 100% normal to not love every part of your body. And it’s completely okay. It’s a journey and it that takes time and pretty consistent effort.
There’s always at least one thing that people don’t really care for about their body.
Now I’m not saying it’s something you should focus on or continue to loathe, but just knowing that you’re normal can take a huge weight off. Everyone has at least one (usually a few) things that they aren’t totally thrilled with about their bodies. Even the most fit person you know. Even the ladies you see in magazines, on covers, and on TV. Literally everyone, guys.
It’s just human nature to want to continue to improve and that it’s all aspects of life, even our bodies. We are our own worst critics and we are awesome at kicking ourselves when we’re down.
Working on a positive body image and really loving my body has been something that I’ve personally been working on for a long time. I know how important a positive body image is and I know the huge difference it makes when you can start to love your body and yourself. BUT that being said, I definitely still have things that aren’t my favorite. I won’t bore you with my own, but just know that we all have them.
Okay, so here are some things to just keep in mind when it comes to loving your body and yourself:
1. You’re totally normal.
Even the most body confident people have a few things that aren’t their favorite. Don’t stress about the things that aren’t your favorite. It’s normal.
2. It’s a process.
Loving your body and yourself is a journey, with ups, downs and turn arounds.
3. Try not to be so hard on yourself.
That thing you hate about your body? Chances are someone else loves it, wishes they had it, or doesn’t even notice it.
4. Focus on what you love.
Focusing on the things you love will make you feel 100 times better. Don’t focus on the things you don’t care for. They’ll show up, they’ll be there, and that’s okay, but they don’t need your attention or focus.
5. Perfection isn’t a thing.
No one is perfect. Perfection doesn’t exist. We’re all constantly growing and learning. Be happy with where you are
Here’s to another happy, healthy week!
Until next time,
Xoxo
