Ahh so this week we got a last minute email that Kevin Hart was gonna be at a nearby comedy club working out some jokes. We decided we HAD to go–the dude is hilarious! But what we walked away with was even more than we imagined…
Lemme just say that the show was AMAZING! He was sooo funny and it was an awesome night! That was to be expected though. What wasn’t expected was getting to see his process for working through jokes.
This is someone who is at the top of his game. He’s the highest paid comedian right now and he consistently comes out with awesome material, BUT he still struggles! He’s still constantly trying to improve and hone his craft, and we got to see that first hand!
It was so cool and honestly refreshing to see someone at that level work through their material and be so totally open and vulnerable in the process. He was totally honest with us on the parts he was struggling with, the jokes that weren’t yet finished, and the ones that he didn’t really like yet, but he did them anyways! DID IT ANYWAYS. He worked through it and explained his thoughts as he went along. Not to mention that he voiced that once he worked through those jokes that he didn’t like, they were going to be damn funny! There was no doubt in his mind, no lack of confidence, just total determination and willingness to sit with the uncomfortable feeling of performing a joke that wasn’t complete yet.
When you’re working on your craft or trying to get to that next step or that next fitness goal (whatever it is), it’s so easy to get caught up in the fact that you’re not there yet, or to get bogged down on the fact that you’re struggling. The crazy thing is, everyone struggles! And it’s a CONSTANT process of honing your craft, regardless of what level you’re at.
Sometimes you need to take a step back and re-evaluate where you’re at and how well you’re actually doing.
Here are some of the unexpected take-aways that I got from the show that night:
1. You’re not alone.
Everyone goes through struggle, no matter what level you’re at. It’s part of the journey and you can’t get to that next level without it. It’s all about pushing through that struggle and learning to enjoy the process.
2. Be okay sitting with discomfort.
Things will get uncomfortable. That’s a given. You just have to be willing to sit with that discomfort as you continue to push forward and past it.
3. Know that you’ll get there.
Keep pushing forward and have confidence that you’ll get there. You might not get there as quickly as you expected, but you will get there if you can push past the discomfort and struggle that it requires.
4. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Challenge yourself and move forward but don’t be too hard on yourself in the process. Be willing to accept the fact that it will be a constant process filled with ups and downs.
5. Keep pushing forward.
Always keep moving forward and challenging yourself. Every next level of your life will require a different you. Be ready and willing to push through the struggle and step into that new you and that next level.
6. Do it anyways.
Unhappy with your result? Still working on it? Struggling? Scared? Do it anyways. Just do it. Put it out there and make changes along the way. Done is better than perfect.
What are working towards right now? Are you in a struggling phase?
If so, just know that you’ll get through it and you’ll come out even stronger on the other side!
Until next time,
Xoxo
