It’s Monday again and for a lot of people that means back to the office for a new work week.
Did you know that working an office job can actually be extremely bad for your body and the way it functions? Okay I know that sentence alone might sound absolutely crazy, but just hear me out.
Can you guess why an office might be bad for your health? You’re probably doing it right now….It’s because of all that sitting that normally goes on with an office job! Now obviously office jobs aren’t the only only jobs that usually involve a lot of sitting. These tips are for any job or situation that will involve extended periods of sitting.
Sitting for extending periods of time can be detrimental to your health. Research has shown that sitting too long comes with a number of health concerns, including an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and increased risk of heart attack. Extended sitting also seems to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.
This is SERIOUS guys! Sitting has serious, negative consequences on our overall health and longevity. Even exercising after work alone isn’t enough to counter these negative effects. You gotta get up and get moving! Break up that sitting time for your health & sanity!
Here are some quick tips for staying healthy at a desk job or any place where extended sitting is involved:
1. Get up and move every hour. Try to get up and get some movement in every hour. Take a walk to the bathroom or stand up and shake it out; stretch a little and then get back to work. This if your health we’re talking about–don’t ignore it!
2. Do some desk stretches. If you can’t get up every hour, at least try to stretch out a little at your desk. Seated cat/cow pose, shoulder or leg circles, something! Anything is better than nothing. Just try to move.
3. Walk on your lunch. If you can, use your lunch to get some steps in. Even if it’s not your whole lunch, just getting a swift walk in will help break up some of that sitting time.
4. Pack a healthy lunch and snacks. This helps so you always have healthy food options and you aren’t forced to eat out. Take the few minutes to make a lunch for yourself–it makes a huge difference!
5. Make sure you’re drinking enough water. Drinking enough water is sooo important! If you’re not conscious of it, it’s easy to go through the day forgetting about your water intake. Drinking more water will make you feel better, plus it’ll give you an extra reason to get up from your desk and get your blood flowing. So go fill up that water bottle! 🙂
Give some of these a try and let me know how they go! I can’t wait to hear how you’re moving at work. Take a stand–your health depends on it! 😀
